This series on the five-fold ministry is based off my handwritten notes, which I took as I attended a church conference on this topic in Mar 2025.
Isa 50:4: The Lord has given me a tongue that I should speak a word in season to him that is weary
Israel was going through exile and captivity, and because of the hardship, they became very bitter and stubborn.
If you are going through a hard time in ministry, get ready because harder times are coming.
Many people sitting in church, are going through traumatic experiences, hardships in their lives, and listening to your sermons each week.
But they cannot understand how a loving God can allow them to go through all this.
The Israel were going hardship in exile, because of their sins.
But prophetic ministry is not to whip them further, but to encourage them.
That’s why a pastor must be prophetic, not only to teach doctrine, but deliver a word in season relevant to what the people are going through.
So the Israelites because of what they were going through in the exile became very rebellious.
But God sent his servant prophet Isaiah to declare good news even the coming of Jesus, the chief shepherd who came into the world 600 years later.
Jesus is the perfect five-fold ministry, the perfect apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, and teacher.
The key is not the amount of knowledge, but the right word at the right time.
That’s what a prophetic pastor is about, speaking a word in season.
If you want to be a good pastor, you need to be able to release a word in season.
So that when you teach and counsel God’s word, it will bring strength to the weary.
v9: The Lord opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, did not turn my back away.
A prophetic pastor, is there to reveal and express the word and will of God, in our members life.
Sometimes we talk so much about what the world is doing, the plans of the devil.
But we must be able to give an answer, which is the solutions we hear from God, to the storms the church members are going through.
We need to express and reveal what God says, in other words, it has to be fresh in your spirit.
It is so easy to just open the Bible and preach the truth, and say the word, we need to believe in the word.
We need more than the truths, and of course we need to be solid in the scripture.
How do you stay fresh preaching the word for 40 years, and having that flowing in you consistently?
That’s why some of us are having itching ears to hear different doctrines, that we turn to superstition.
Some pastors know the word, intellectual strong, but so dead and stubborn.
So a prophetic pastor not only bring the truths, but the truth that is fresh, from many different angles.
The truth with freshness and life.
Some members even know what they want, and can search scriptures to support what they want.
So they don’t serve in church, and what the church wants.
So a prophetic pastor is essential, to reveal the will of God.
The moment you don’t have the prophetic anointing, all you will think is structure and organisation.
I see this church doing this prophetic anointing, so we must do it, and organise it.
Now the will of God comes with his timing as well, how he leads you, and his purposes.
We are all today from so many different countries, and nations, but our boss / Jesus is here.
How can we do the same thing, when the culture, history, political, social arena are all different?
So we need to know the word, the will, and also the way through the prohetic.
Jesus was the best prophetic pastor in a few ways.
Firstly he is so normal in his ministry, saying to his disciples, bring the children to me.
And unlike some prophetic people, who when they prophesy do it in King James.
A prophetic pastor preaches the word, and yet move in the prophetic anointing, like an added arsenal, but does not remove the authority or impact in preaching God’s word.
Jesus was also a great pastor and prophet, because he ministered by revelation.
John 5:19: Most assuredly, I say to you unless the Son does what he sees what the Father does.
Jesus did not minister out of his divine position even as God, but from his relationship with God.
We should look at our members, children, and say I look at you through the lens of Scripture, not the world / circumstances.
You want to have a spiritual church, you need the prophetic anointing.
Else ministry becomes dry, legalistic, and powerless.
When you have the prophetic anointing, you will have the elements of the prophetic, education, comfort, and exhortation.
Every congregation is different, so the style, way we convey the message.
This is why we need the prophetic anointing, the power of the spirit, which even Bible school cannot give.
The danger of a growing church, is when eloquence and speech seeps in.
It is not the demonstration of an eloquent preacher, or the programs.
But the only cutting-edge we have to make impact in this generation, is to have something come from God.
Let’s now see how do we become prophetic.
Like Jesus our master prophet, we need to develop a lifestyle of intimacy with God.
He did not bask in his privilege of being the son of God, but showed to the whole world, how to ask God to open his ears to hear, so he can bring strength to the weary.
