God will Pour out His Spirit on Israel (Joel 2:28-29)

God will Pour out His Spirit on Israel (Joel 2:28-29)

Today I was reading through Joel a few more times. And finally came to this verse, which I always vividly remember quoted in Acts 2 during The Day of Pentecost.

And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: and also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.

Joel 2:28-29, KJV

God will restore Israel, and part of this restoration is bringing back to their land, giving them a new heart.

As discussed in Hos 6:2 article, we see God bringing Israel back to dwell in their homeland (Jer 32:37-38, Ezek 36:24-25).

This physical restoration is also hinted in Joel 2:18-27. Although as stated in Joel 2:25 article, the restoration is predicated on Israel’s obedience.

And also in Hos 6:2 article, we see God giving them a renewed heart to follow Him (Jer 32:39, Ezek 36:26).

New Testament believers are also given this new heart; which means a changed attitude towards God, that we seek to please Him (John 3:6-7, John 3:6-10, Heb 10:22).

Now, if we read further onto Ezek 36:27, we see that in addition God promises to also give them His Spirit.

And the promise of His Spirit, is also echoed here in Joel 2:28-32. The partial fulfilment of this prophecy, can be seen during The Day of Pentecost in Acts 2.

Where all the Jews present (although not whole of Israel yet), started speaking in tongues.

Of course, this promise applies to us as Christians today too. Because, the church is a type of Israel. And we are all God’s chosen people (Joel 2:32, Rom 10:13).

In fact further in Acts 10:44-46, we also see the Gentiles receiving / being baptised by the Holy Spirit, as initially evidenced through them speaking in tongues too.
