Bible Typologies: The Fall of Mankind Into Sin

Bible Typologies: The Fall of Mankind Into Sin

This series on Bible Typologies is based off my notes, which I took as I studied the Bible and various resources on this topic in Feb 2025.

Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

Gen 3:21, KJV

Story (Gen 3):

Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field, which the Lord had made.

The serpent here is identified in Rev 12:29, as Satan himself. Although it is not clear why he chose to indwell in this particular beast, which the Lord had made.

And he said unto the woman, did God say you can eat every tree of the garden?

The woman replied, we may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden.

But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God had said, you shall not eat of it nor touch it, lest you die.

And the serpent said not the woman, you shall not surely die.

For God knows that in the day you eat of it, then your eyes shall be opened, and you shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

In other words, Satan was saying to Eve, God falsely threatened you with death.

And “you shall be as gods”, was Satan tempting them to thirst for power.

And “knowing good and evil”, was Satan telling them, God is withholding a good thing from you (self-rule), to keep you dependent on Him.

And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit and ate it.

And she also gave into her husband with her, and he did eat.

And when the eyes of them both were opened, they knew that they were naked.

And they sowed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

And they heard the voice of the Lord walking in the garden in the cool of the day.

And Adam and his wife hid themselves, from the presence of God amongst the trees of the garden.

And the Lord God called unto Adam, where are you?

Adam replied, I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, and I hid myself.

And God said, who told you that you were naked, have you eaten of the tree which I commanded you should not eat?

And Adam replied, the woman which you have given to be with me, she gave me of the tree and I ate.

And God said unto the woman, what is this that you have done?

And the woman said, the serpent deceived me, and I did eat.

So God said to the serpent, because you have done this, you are cursed above all cattle, and every beast of the field.

Upon your belly you shall go, and dust shall you eat all the days of your life.

Although the exact meaning of the serpent being cursed above all the rest of the animal kingdom is unclear, Paul later reinforces the idea that all creation was affected by the fall (Rom 8:20-22).

Upon your belly you shall go, does not insist that the serpent previously had legs, it is equally likely to be a poetic language.

Supporting the fact, that the animal kingdom will not be able to reverse its post-fall condition of its own.

And you shall eat dust all the days of your life, is also figurative for extreme humiliation, to Satan, alluded in v15.

So God said then to them, I will put enmity between you (serpent / Satan), and the woman.

And between your seed, and her seed.

And it shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.

Enmity represents the conflict between Satan, and God’s people, especially Jesus Christ.

And the “bruising”, depicts the long struggle between good and evil, with God ultimately winning, through Jesus Christ, the last Adam.

And unto the woman God said, I will greatly multiply your sorrow in conception, and in sorrow you shall bring forth children.

And your desire shall be to your husband, and he shall rule over you.

This does not suggest male dominance over females, rather it assigns husbandly responsibility for leadership in the marriage relationship.

As a result of their sin and disobedience to God, both Adam and Eve turned to their own ways.

And the Lord indicated, there would be an ongoing struggle between the woman and man, for leadership in the marriage relationship.

So, it is the redemptive role assigned to the husband toward the wife, as means of reinstating the original partnership.

Then unto Adam, God said, because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and eaten of the tree, cursed is the ground because of you, and in sorrow you will eat of it all the days of your life.

Thorns and thistles will bring forth from the ground, and you shall eat the herbs of the field.

By the sweat of your brow, you shall eat food until you return to the ground.

For out of it were you taken, and from dust were you created, and to dust shall you return.

And unto Adam and his wife Eve, God made coasts of skins, and clothed them.

And God said, behold man is become as one of us, to know good and evil.

And now lest he put forth his hand, and also eat of the tree of life, and live forever, thus God sent them out of the garden of Eden, to till the ground from where he was taken from.

So God drove out man, and placed a flaming sword to guard every way, leading to the tree of life.

Typology:

Recall from Bible Typologies: Jesus Cana Wine Miracle, that because Adam and Even sinned they lost the Spirit of God which Jesus won back.

Now, if we look further after Adam and Eve sinned, they covered themselves with fig leaves.

And this is symbolic of them covering themselves with the law.

And people ask what is the forbidden fruit? And I say figs!

Because if you eat a fig, and you become naked, you are going to grab fig leaves and make an apron.

So, this points to when were figs ripe, it’s going to be around 9th of Adar.

So the original sin, happened at around 9th of Adar (last month of Jewish calendar).

And the next month, in the Jewish calendar is Nisan (first month in Jewish calendar).

But the typology is this, after they lost the spirit and became naked.

God did the very first Passover, he killed an innocent animal to make them clothes of skin.

So He did the first Passover, before He sent them out.

So we see the typology of Passover, here in the fall of mankind account.

But Jesus came sinless to this earth, innocent, and gave His blood once and for all, so we would be forgiven of our sins, for all that believe on Him.

If you haven’t believed on Jesus, now call out His name.

You can be saved from God’s wrath poured out during the tribulation, when you believe that Jesus is Lord, and that He came to earth fully God and fully man, for the purpose of making away for us to be with Him forever.

There always had to be a blood atoning sacrifice for the remission of sins, and Jesus came to perform this once and for all, when He shed His innocent blood dying on the cross.

He was buried that day, and rose again three days later, just as Scripture told us He would.

And the Bible tells us that when we believe He did this, we are saved.

Jesus paid it all, the only thing that we have to do is believe.

Things like our own good works, and getting baptised, are things that happen after we are saved.

So let’s believe in Jesus’ finished work on the cross for us today, and eagerly expect His coming for us soon!
